You plug in a flash drive to send a proposal, print schoolwork, or open a customer file, and the USB not showing files problem hits at the worst possible moment. The drive may appear empty, show the wrong capacity, or not appear in File Explorer at all. Do not format it yet. Formatting can overwrite the file table and turn a simple visibility issue into a real data-recovery job.
First, protect the files you cannot afford to lose

Be cautious if you find strange shortcut icons, unfamiliar executable files, or folders that return after you remove the Hidden setting. This can point to shortcut malware. The malware often hides the real files and places fake shortcuts in their place. Do not open those shortcuts. Scan the computer and drive with current security software before restoring or copying anything.
Confirm that Windows assigned a drive letter
If you hear the USB connection sound but cannot find the drive in File Explorer, check Disk Management. Right-click the Start button and choose Disk Management. Look for a removable disk with the correct approximate size.
If the partition looks healthy but has no letter, right-click it and select Change Drive Letter and Paths. Assign an unused letter. The drive should then appear in File Explorer. If it appears as Offline, bringing it online may help, but do not initialize a disk that contains files you need.
A drive listed as RAW is different. RAW means Windows cannot recognize its file system. It may be caused by unsafe removal, corruption, or a failing device. Do not format a RAW drive if the data matters. Recovery should come before repair attempts.
Safe fixes when the USB drive is visible
When Windows recognizes the drive and the files are not obviously hidden, use the least invasive option first. Copy any accessible files to your computer or another drive before attempting repairs. Prioritize current work, financial records, photos, and business documents.
Windows includes a file-system repair tool. In File Explorer, right-click the USB drive, choose Properties, open the Tools tab, and select Check under Error checking. This can repair logical errors on a healthy drive. It is useful when the drive opens but folders are missing, files have odd names, or Windows reports errors.
There is a trade-off: repair tools modify the drive’s file system. For low-value files on a stable drive, that is usually reasonable. For irreplaceable family photos, client records, tax files, or a drive that may be failing, recover the data first instead of asking Windows to repair it.
If the files become visible, copy them off immediately. A USB drive that has already corrupted once should not be trusted with the only copy of important data. After your files are safely backed up, you can format the drive and test it. If errors return, replace it.
When the USB asks to be formatted
A message saying, “You need to format the disk before you can use it,” does not prove the files are gone. It only means the computer cannot read the current file system. Clicking Format is fast, but it is not the right first move when the data has value.
The same caution applies if Disk Management labels the space as Unallocated or if the drive shows 0 bytes. These symptoms can result from partition damage, controller failure, or a counterfeit flash drive. A counterfeit drive may report a larger capacity than it actually has, then overwrite older files once the real capacity is full.
Professional recovery may be the smarter choice when the drive contains the only copy of critical information, does not stay connected, has physical damage, or is encrypted. Recovery work is most successful when nobody has formatted, repartitioned, or written new data to the device.
Mac and cross-platform USB problems
A USB formatted for a Mac may not work normally on a Windows computer, and some Windows-formatted drives behave differently on a Mac. ExFAT is generally the most practical format for drives shared between modern Windows PCs and Macs, especially for files larger than 4 GB.
Still, formatting for compatibility wipes the drive. If the USB used to work and suddenly does not, do not assume the format is the problem. Check it on the computer it was last used with and look for the drive in Disk Utility on a Mac or Disk Management on Windows.
Encryption can also make a drive look inaccessible. BitLocker-protected drives require the password or recovery key. Do not use random “unlock” tools or try to bypass encryption. Without the correct key, the data may be intentionally unreadable.

A few common actions create bigger problems than the original missing-files issue:
- Formatting the USB before checking whether the files are hidden or recoverable.
