To troubleshoot intermittent internet drops, you need to find out whether the failure starts with your internet provider, modem, router, Wi-Fi signal, wiring, or one specific device.
The fastest fix is rarely guessing. A few targeted checks can narrow the issue down quickly and prevent a small network problem from turning into a lost workday.
Start by identifying what is actually dropping
People often call every connection problem “the internet,” but the symptoms matter. If every phone, computer, TV, and smart device disconnects at the same time, the problem is likely upstream: your provider, modem, router, power, or main network equipment. If only one laptop keeps losing access, focus on that laptop before replacing anything else.
When the drop happens, check whether devices can still connect to the Wi-Fi network name. If the network name disappears entirely, your router may be restarting, overheating, or losing power. If you have cable internet, remove unnecessary coax splitters where practical. Every splitter slightly reduces signal strength, and old or low-quality splitters can create problems. Do not disconnect lines you are unsure about, especially in a business or multi-unit property. The better move is to document the issue and have the provider test the signal at the modem.
Keep a short outage log for a day or two: the time, duration, affected devices, modem light status, and whether wired devices also failed. Specific evidence gets better results than saying the internet “goes out sometimes.”
Troubleshoot intermittent internet drops on Wi-Fi
If your internet connection stays active on a wired device but Wi-Fi repeatedly fails, your wireless network needs attention. Start with router placement. Wi-Fi signals struggle through brick, plaster, metal, concrete, mirrors, plumbing, and dense walls.
