A computer that takes 10 minutes to start, freezes during a video call, or stalls when you open email can derail an entire workday. The best fixes for slow computer problems depend on what is actually causing the slowdown – too many background programs, a failing drive, malware, low storage, overheating, or even a network issue that only looks like a computer problem.

Start with the simple checks, but do not keep forcing a struggling computer to work if it is showing serious warning signs. Repeated crashes, clicking noises from a hard drive, disappearing files, or sudden pop-ups can turn a slow PC into a data-loss or security emergency.

1. Restart the Computer and Check What Opens at Startup

It sounds basic, but a full restart clears temporary processes that may have become stuck or consumed too much memory. Choose Restart rather than simply closing the laptop lid or putting the computer to sleep. If performance improves after every restart but quickly gets worse again, something is likely running in the background.

On a Windows PC, open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc. Check the Processes tab for applications using an unusually high amount of CPU, memory, or disk activity. Task Manager can show whether memory usage stays near 90% or 100% during normal work. Closing programs may provide short-term relief. Adding RAM can offer a more lasting improvement if the computer supports it and the rest of the hardware is still in good condition.

This is not always the right investment. A very old computer with a failing drive, outdated processor, or unsupported operating system may be better served by an SSD upgrade, a repair plan, or replacement. The right answer depends on the machine and what you need it to do.

9. Rule Out Network Problems in a Home or Small Office

Slow cloud files, choppy calls, delayed printing, and websites that spin forever may point to a network problem rather than a slow computer. Test with a wired Ethernet connection if possible. If performance improves immediately, the issue is likely Wi-Fi coverage, interference, router placement, or an aging router.

For small offices, one unreliable access point or poorly configured network can affect every employee. Separating guest devices, updating network equipment, and placing access points correctly can improve both speed and security.
